This year, Andy Andresen, Bob Joers, Tom Loegering, Dennis York and Tony Osborne celebrated
their arrival in Hyder entitling them to the Iron Butt Association's exclusive 48 States Plus! Award .
Details about qualifying for this award can be found on the Iron Butt
web site: www.ironbutt.com. It works as follows:
- Begin and end the ride wherever and whenever you wish.
- Since it's necessary to ride all forty-eight contiguous states and Alaska
to qualify for the award, it probably doesn't make sense to end (or begin)
the ride anywhere but Hyder, as it's closer to the “lower forty-eight”
than any other Alaskan city. (Of course, you could stop by and visit with
the group in Hyder during your 49-state ride).
- You must show evidence of having visited the
forty-nine states, in accordance with the Iron Butt Association rules.
- The ride must be completed in ten days or less.
- To qualify for the world record for the ride, riders must observe additional
rules set out by the Iron Butt Association, which are available by special
request. These rules are the same as the rules previously required
by the Guinness organization before they stopped recognizing such records.
The Sealaska Inn will post a photo of riders who earn the award in conjunction
with Hyder Seek 2009 on the “Wall of Fame” in the restaurant. To
date, more than 100 riders other than Ron Ayres have earned the award
in conjunction with Hyder Seek.
It is NOT our intention to encourage anyone who wishes to make the 49-state
ride to attempt to do so in less than the ten days that are allowed. We
won't be recognizing any records.
Only riders who have earned other Iron Butt certifications, such as a
10/10ths Award, a Bun Burner Gold 3000, or a Saddle Sore 5000, should
consider this ride. Most riders should be able to plot a route that
requires riding an average of less than 900 miles per day, but inexperienced
riders should not attempt such mileage.
