Taste of Chile (and a Dash of Argentina)

The “Taste of Chile and a Dash of Argentina” is a 9-Day "Discovery Tour" that starts, where the world begins to end: the sleepy city of Osorno in northern Patagonia.

The Adventure is located in the midst of some of the most stunning scenery and alluring motorcycling destinations in the world: smoking, snow covered volcanos, lush coastal rainforests, crystal clear lakes, thick forests and the seemingly endless Argentinean Pampas. Destinations include the busy Chilean lake resort of Pucón, the world famous South American resort of Bariloche, and "Butch Cassiday and the Sundance Kid" territory at Esquel. The trip includes a picturesque, relaxed ferry crossing from Chaitén to Puerto Montt before returning to Osorno.

A wide variety of roads await the riders. Mostly good, paved roads and exciting sweepers bear testimony to the area's reputation as a motorcycling paradise. Some unavoidable but relatively easy gravel sections as well as several steep mountain roads, requiring more concentration and riding experience, add an interesting variety to the Adventure.

With the beautiful summer weather south of the equator in February, "Taste of Chile" offers a great 9-day getaway from winter in the Northern Hemisphere.

Day 1: Welcome to Chile! We will pick you up at the small airport of Osorno and bring you to our Five Star base hotel. The hotel is within walking distance from the city center. We'll turn over the motorcycles to you and will have a kickoff meeting to introduce you to the coming Adventure. We'll kick off things with a welcome dinner in the evening.

Hotel: Sonesta

Day 2: Osorno - Pucón (~230 km). We begin our riding with a trip north - entering Chile's Lake District. There is hardly any traffic while we cruise the sweepers of the chilean back country roads. In the background the shape of the smoldering volcanoe Villarica shows up - our destination Pucón is right next to it!

Hotel: Hotel Playa Grande Suites

Day 3: Pucón – Bariloche (~400 km). There is some serious riding today! After Pucón we start climbing through the Villarica National Park, approaching the 3780m high snow covered volcano Lanin. Crossing the border to Argentina we encounter our first easily manageable gravel road section (~30 km). As soon as we hit the main road again, we get a taste of the Argentinean Pampa – a wonderful road carries us through desert like sceneries and we arrive in Bariloche just in time for the sunset.

Hotel: Hotel Nahuel Huapi

Day 4: Rest day in Bariloche (optional ride possible). Bariloche has a lot to offer; you can easily spend the day walking around in the city, having coffee and tasting the famous pastry and chocolates. As for riding: everything from a short ride on pavement up to 250 km partly on gravel is possible. The Nahuel Huapi National Park provides us with the stunning beauty of the “7 Lakes Road” and some incredible views – a day in paradise!

Hotel: Hotel Nahuel Huapi

Day 5: Bariloche - Esquel (~300 km). Today we ride through the famous "Butch Cassiday and The Sundance Kid" region to Esquel, at the foot of the Andes Mountains. We'll be surrounded by mountains as we travel on relaxing, country roads. Esquel – which appears like a smaller and more laid back Bariloche – welcomes us again with scenic beauty and a luxurious hotel.

Hotel: Hostería Cumbres Blancas

Day 6: Esquel, Argentina – Chaitén, Chile (~250 km). We have to cross the mountains back to Chile today – there will be about 150 km on gravel, sometimes on steeper sections. We leave the Argentinean side and start climbing towards the mountain rain forest. The road here is more basic, but nonetheless provides us with scenic beauty and complete remoteness. This is chilean wilderness! Once across the mountains we proceed to Chaitén, a small city on the seashore.

Hotel: Lodge Yelcho

Day 7: Puerto Varas (~170 km + ferry). 60 km of gravel road bring us early in the morning north to Caleta Gonzalo, where we board the 5 hours ferry that brings us along the coast to Hornopirén. Some more gravel and we meet the next (short) ferry and finally head for Puerto Varas, a beautiful place, which contains perhaps the best preserved concentration of Middle European architecture in entire Chile.

Hotel: Hotel Bellavista

Day 8: Puerto Varas - Osorno (~150 km) An easy and scenic ride on the last day of our tour! Along the Lake Llanquihue and the foot of the Volcano Osorno we approach our final destination and have time enough to relax and prepare for our farewell dinner, where we remember the adventures of this tour!
